Member		You're right about the slaughter houses, deleuran, and if Brigitte Bardot, Paul McCartney, and other big name anti seal hunters lead protesters into abattoirs we could all be forced to eat vegetables. A more serious argument for the seal hunt is population control. Each annual harvest is limited to how many can be hunted -- which is a drop in the bucket against the total population of seals in the North Atlantic. Stocks of fish, which are food for the native people of the north are being depleted. This isn't to say seal hunters should be allowed to treat the animals inhumanely, like skinning them while they're still alive. mackaycartoons, au 24. juillet 2008 [aviser] [citer] [repondre]

Member		I am a bit divided in this issue. Man has always hunted animals, for food for their skin etc. Some years back, Brigitte Bardot made a huge campaign against seal hunting in Greenland and Canada. It was a catastrophe for the inuits in Greenland who for many hundreds of years had lived off what nature could give them. But never killed more than they should use to keep a living. And it was never a threat to the population of seals or any other animals. I guess they had the same philosophy regarding nature, as the indians of America. The problem is, if the hunting becomes an industry, threatens the population of animals, and if the animals suffer unnecessarily. And I guess that's where this cartoon comes in I guess. I think it is a great cartoon. Very well done, and very clear in its symbolic. All this just to say that we should not condemn the killing of animals without giving the reason a thought. Nobody say anything to the thousands pigs and cows that are killed in the slaughterfactories every day. And do we think about it when we eat a steak? Perhaps this image may be popular in Europe, but it's definitely not here in Canada, especially in the Atlantic provinces where many people depend on the seasonal hunt in order to make a living. To be fair, the young pups with the whitecoats have not been hunted since the 80's, but who said editorial cartooning is supposed to be fair?
